What Is Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a research-supported model of therapy that sees the mind as a system of inner voices, each with its own role and history. Rather than treating difficult emotions as problems to fix, IFS treats them as parts worth understanding. Dr. Richard Schwartz developed IFS in the 1980s while working as a family therapist. He noticed that clients described their inner world as competing voices, where one part wanted to speak up, and another stayed silent.
